Tutorial On How To Make A Decomesh Wreath

April 4, 2015

My sister convinced me to make an Easter wreath with her. Actually, after taking down my Mardi Gras wreath (3-4 weeks late) my house was looking kind of bare. Also, I had some people ask questions about my Christmas wreath post, so I thought now would be a good time to clarify some of those questions using videos. Sometimes it’s hard to really show what needs to happen in pictures.  This happens to be an Easter wreath but you could make on for any holiday or season. You could make a 4th of July wreath or a summer one with cut flip flops on it or a pail and shovel. Your imagination is the only limit!

So we got together to go shopping for the things we needed at Michael’s. And the next day, she came to my house and we made Easter wreaths, of course, while her child was napping and mine were out of the house. That’s the only way to get things done, for sure.

Here is my sister’s wreath! It came out so cute!

Here is mine! The ribbons and decomesh are the same but we put different decorations on ours so it gave them a slightly different look.

When we go shopping for all of these things, we take up an entire aisle at Michael’s. There is a lot to see and we look at all of it.

We put everything we think we may use out on the floor to figure out what goes together best. Lots of things we put back deciding that it doesn’t work with this. It’s really just how you want your wreath to look. Personalize it!

If this process is not for you, you can also find decomesh on Amazon. Decorative Floral Mesh 21 inches x 30 ft ORANGE  This is the orange color, which may be perfect for my next one, a summer wreath, a bright and happy color. My favorite! But they have lots of colors. Check it out. For my Mardi Gras wreath, I ordered everything online and I made my wreath when it arrived. The wreath form is 20 inches from inside wrung to inside wrung. Panacea Wire Wreath Frame, 20-Inch, Green You can also just get a large pack of pipe cleaners that goes with your color scheme, or just stick with white like these. Fibre Craft 100-Pack Fuzzy Stix Chenille Stems, 12-Inch, White  And a pink ribbon. 1.5″ Shocking Pink Chevron ZigZag Grosgrain Ribbon 5 yard  And a yellow ribbon. Schiff Ribbons 7/8-Inch Polyester Grosgrain Aspirin Polka Dot Ribbon, 10-Yard, Yellow/White This decomech tubing is also really cute. Head to the dollar store and get a pair of flip flops and to Michael’s to get some clip on flowers.

Now you are all set up to make my summer wreath with me! Let me know if you’re in!

Here are the things you need:

20 inch wreath form

pipe cleaners (that would blend with your color scheme)

8-9 yards deco mesh (21 inches wide) if you go around twice. Add 4-5 yards if you go around the wreath a 3rd time)

1-3 other ribbons (8-9 yards of each)

decorations (Easter eggs, butterflies, egg garland, bunnies)

Possibly needed depending on what kind of decorations you buy:

fishing line

floral wire

I used 3 ribbons with this wreath as with my Christmas wreath, but I used only one in my Thanksgiving wreath. In this wreath I went around twice with the decomesh and ribbons. In the Thanksgiving and Christmas wreaths, I went around the circle 3 times with the deco mesh and ribbons. They are very full and beautiful. I think I like going around 3 times best. But I only went around twice with the Easter wreath.

Directions:

Cut the pipe cleaners in half. Twist them at every cross section of the wreath form, inner and outer. I like to twist them on the cross sections because I think that they slide along the sides if you put them there. The inner and outer twists are pictured here.

Twist the pipe cleaners in the inner and outer rungs on the cross sections.

Gather the decomesh and all of the ribbon with the ribbon on top. Pinch the ends together and twist it into one of the pipe cleaners.

Form a loop. Give it about 10 to 12 inches and twist the decomesh and ribbon into the next pipe cleaner. Look at it to determine if it is size you like. Don’t make the loops too big and floppy. Make sure that you are making the same size loops all the way around or your wreath will be lopsided.

Continue with the loops all the way around. When you reach the twist where you started, twist it there again before you move to the outside row. If there is not enough room take another (extra) pipe cleaner and twist it in from the middle row of the wreath form. You need to twist all twists very tight so it holds all the decomesh and ribbon in.

If you run out of ribbon and need to start a new roll, twist the end of the first one into the pipe cleaner and then twist beginning edge of the new roll in. There will be several twists on top of each other. If there is a little extra on the first roll but not enough to reach the next twist, cut the ribbon so it does not hang out.

Here is a video on how to do this step if you need more clarification.

To end the wreath, twist the decomesh and ribbons in very tightly to where you began that row. You may need another pipe cleaner to really secure it if that pipe cleaner is short. Just twist a new pipe cleaner coming in through the back in that same place. End with the deco mesh right next to where you began so there is no hole. Cut the ends off leaving a couple of inches when you are sure it is secure. Tuck the ends under the wreath. You can use another pipe cleaner to make sure it stays hidden if needed.

Here is a video on how to do this step if you need more clarification.

If you decide to add something at the end, use a pipe cleaner to twist it on. I used sparkly Easter eggs, and Easter egg garland, lots of butterflies, and a wire bunny. I twisted the wire ends of the Easter eggs around the back and then secured them with a pipe cleaner. The butterflies were clip on. And I use pipe cleaners to secure the bottom of the bunny but since it was wire mesh, I used fishing line to secure the top so you couldn’t see it. I looped it though the wire mesh and tied it on the other side of the wreath, making sure that I got part of the wreath form in there. The large egg was made of styrofoam so I pushed a floral wire through the back center of it and wired it to the wreath form. The egg garland, I twisted into every other pipe cleaner that I twisted for the deco mesh and ribbon.
